Damian Sookram


Artist and Song Writer

Damian Sookram is a Trinidadian Classical Chutney artist and song writer. Born in the village of Tarouba in Marabella, the youngest child and son of Devanand Sookram a well accomplish Classical Chutney Artist, Damian began learning to play dholak from the guidance of uncle at the age of 5 years and at 7 he started accompanying his dad and other artists at events such as Indian Cultural Pageants, Mastana Bahar, Maticoors, religious events and fundraisers throughout Trinidad. He also learned to play the Harmonium and other musical instruments at the age of 10. At 13 years, Damian migrated to New Jersey, USA; he attended Dickinson High School in Jersey City NJ. With music in his blood, he did not forget his culture; he continued to attend mandirs and other cultural events playing dholak for other artists. At the age of 22 Damian decided to broaden his musical talents by becoming a singer, today he sings Classical, Chutney, Film, Bhajans and Soca songs. Obsessed with the Traditional Chutney and Classical music in 2008 Damian formed a musical group named “DHD Crew” which stands for Dholak Harmioum and Drum Machine. He shared stages with well knows artists such as Anand, Rakesh and the late Sharm Yankaran, Terry Gajraj, Rick Ramdehal, David, Sassy and Joey Ramoutar, Riki Jai, Calypso Rose, Crazy, Hunter and Anil Bheem just to name a few performing in New York, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, St Maarten and Trinidad. Damian has had successful recordings in Soca Chutney teaming up with various artists. Today Damian continues to perform in cultural events and chutney shows throughout USA and plans to don’t stop because music is in his blood.
